Las Vegas is a destination city. Businesses come from all over the world to attend conventions in the spacious casinos. In addition to gamblers and convention goers the entertainment industry has catered to families and family activities. Top entertainers provide nightly shows of all types. Many of the casinos have parks with facilities for all age groups. The bright lights displays will leave the first-time visitor aghast.
Casino/Hotel Shows
The production shows offered by the Casinos are as varied as you might imagine. Hollywood celebrities perform nightly for weeks and sometimes for years. In addition Las Vegas is home to Invitational Native Americans Festival every spring, Helldorado days in May, featuring the Old West with western costumes, a rodeo and parades. The National Finals Rodeo comes to town in December with pickup trucks and cowboy hats everywhere you look.

Lake Mead National Recreational Area
Lake Mead is a huge body of water extending some 110 miles long from the Hoover Dam and averages 200 feet deep during normal water years. It has 700 miles of shore line and six major recreational centers with marinas and launching facilities. Films exhibits about natural and cultural history are offered at the Alan Bible Visitors Center 4 miles East of Boulder City on US 93. Boating and fishing is available. Fishing is permitted year around however licenses are required. Water levels have been lower the past several years due to drought conditions. Much of Lake Mead is surrounded by a desert eco-system which can be observed at visitor centers as well as by auto as you travel through the area. Cruises of various types (dinner and dancing or just sight seeing) are available. Food is available as well as picnicking areas. Take time to view and appreciate the desert landscape which is not usually as accessible as it is around Lake Mead.
Hoover Dam
Hoover Dam was built in 1931-35 for flood control and water storage. It is 726 feet
high and backs up one of the largest man lakes in the United States, Lake Mead. The visitor center at the dam offers many exhibits which explain the construction and function of the dam. The overlook on top of the visitors center offers a scenic view of the Dam and the surrounding area. The Dam Tour includes a 1-hour guided tour of the generators, tunnels and inspection points. This tour begins 530 feet under ground and provides a view of the 8 generators which generate massive amounts of electrical power as the water passes through the dam and causes the rotation of the huge turbines.
